UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Set After Playoff Completion
The Champions League knockout stage is now fully set following the conclusion of the playoff round on Wednesday.
Qualification Process
A total of eight teams secured direct qualification from the league phase, finishing in the top spots. Meanwhile, another eight teams advanced through the playoff round.
The teams that qualified directly from the league phase:
Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille, and Aston Villa.
Joining them from the playoff round:
Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Feyenoord, and Club Brugge.
Draw Ceremony and Matchup Rules
UEFA will conduct the Round of 16 draw today, Friday, in Nyon, Switzerland, alongside the draws for the quarter-finals and semi-finals, setting each team's path to the final.
From the knockout stage onwards, teams will be grouped based on their final rankings in the league phase.
As per the rules, teams that qualified directly will face teams that advanced from the playoff round, meaning no direct qualifiers can face each other in the Round of 16.
Additionally, direct qualifiers will play the second leg at home, giving them a potential advantage.

The Champions League Round of 16 matchups are as follows:
- Paris Saint-Germain or Benfica × Barcelona or Liverpool
- Club Brugge or Dortmund × Lille or Aston Villa
- Real Madrid or Bayern Munich × Atlético Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen
- PSV Eindhoven or Feyenoord × Arsenal or Inter Milan
Potential Blockbuster Clashes Ahead
Looking ahead to the quarter-finals and semi-finals, several high-profile matchups could unfold, including a potential "El Clásico" between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
However, due to the draw structure, a Clásico won’t happen in the quarter-finals but could occur in the semi-finals—if Barcelona overcomes Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid advances past their own hurdles.
Other Potential Key Clashes:
- Madrid The derby between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid could take place in the Round of 16, depending on the draw.
- The German Clasico between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund could happen in the semi-finals if both teams progress.
- Bayern Munich vs. Arsenal is a possible quarter-final clash if Arsenal first overcomes Feyenoord in the Round of 16.
- Liverpool vs. Real Madrid could be a semi-final rematch, provided Liverpool faces and defeats PSG in the Round of 16.
- Barcelona vs. Bayern Munich is another potential semi-final clash, depending on Barcelona’s draw against Benfica in the Round of 16.
- If Liverpool faces PSG in the Round of 16, a Liverpool vs. Arsenal semi-final could also take place, should Arsenal defeat PSV Eindhoven in the Round of 16.
